Retake day is one of the most underused resources in school photography. Many parents don't know it exists, don't know how to request it, or feel guilty about using it. None of these are good reasons to live with photos you're unhappy with.

What Retake Day Is

Most school photography companies schedule a retake day two to four weeks after the original picture day. On retake day, children who missed the original picture day get their photos taken, and children whose photos didn't turn out well can have them retaken.

Retake day is a standard part of the school photography process. Using it is not unusual or demanding — it's expected.

When to Request a Retake

You should request a retake if:

  • Your child was absent on picture day
  • The photos came back with obvious technical problems (bad lighting, blurry image, eyes closed)
  • Your child looks genuinely unhappy or distressed in the photo
  • There was a wardrobe issue (stain, wrong outfit)
  • Your child had a temporary appearance issue (black eye, prominent scratch) that has since healed

You do not need to justify a retake request. If you're not satisfied with the photos, request a retake.

How to Request a Retake

The process varies by school and company, but typically:

  1. Return the original photos — most companies require you to return the original package to receive a retake. Do not open the envelope if you think you might want a retake.
  2. Notify the school — tell your child's teacher or the school office that you want a retake. They will ensure your child is included on retake day.
  3. Send your child on retake day — retake day is usually listed on the school calendar. Make sure your child knows to go to the photography station.

Making the Most of Retake Day

Retake day is your second chance to get this right. Apply everything you learned from the first attempt:

  • Choose a better outfit if the first one didn't photograph well
  • Prepare your child the night before, not the morning of
  • Give them a genuine reason to smile, not a command to perform one
  • Send a backup outfit in their backpack

If You've Already Ordered

If you pre-ordered a package and want a retake, contact the photography company directly. Most companies will apply your original order to the retake photos. Get confirmation of this in writing (email) before retake day. If the question is whether to buy now or wait, pair this with how to choose a school photo package and the vendor's refund terms.
